Herod Antipas (? BCE-ca. CE 39) was ruler of Galilee 4 BCE-CE 39. He was responsible for the execution of John the Baptist and a participant in the trial of Jesus of Nazareth. Herod Antipas, called Herod the tetrarch in the New Testament, was a Jew as the term was understood in Herodian times. He was the son of Herod the Great by Malthace and became the king of Galilee through succession on the death of his father Herod the Great.
