This photo is a reconstruction of Herod's Temple as it appeared early in the first century CE. Until its CE 70 destruction the Temple was the focal point for Jewish worship in the first century. For the festivals pilgrims from all over the known world would descend on Jerusalem. For those Jews living outside their ancient homeland a pilgrimage was likely a once in a lifetime event.
