During the persecution of Domitian
(Roman emperor CE 81-96) the Romans banished John ca. CE 95 to the Isle of
Patmos (Revelation 1:9). Presumably his
release came in ca. CE 96 upon the assassination of Domitian and Nerva's
succession to the throne. The Roman senate removed Domitians honors and
allowed those banished in the persecution to return to their homes and restored
their property (Eusebius
Ecclesiastical History 3.2, Boyle
1955:103).
While John saw his vision in Patmos it was after his release and
return to Ephesus that he finished writing the book of Revelation. John remained
at Ephesus until his death, ca. CE 98, at the time of Trajan (Eusebius
Ecclesiastical History 3.23, Boyle
1955:104).
